As we age, our eyes become more vulnerable to diseases and conditions that, if left untreated, can lead to permanent vision loss. Regular eye exams are the first line of defense when it comes to ensuring that your eyes remain healthy and free of disease.
Eye exams assess the quality of your vision and can detect eye diseases before they cause irreversible damage to your eyes. Eye exams can also give you insight into your overall health, highlighting issues like high blood pressure and diabetes before you start experiencing symptoms.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends adults between the ages of 18 to 64 have their eyes examined at least once every two years, and at-risk patients should undergo annual exams. However, most optometrists agree that everyone can benefit from yearly exams.
The AOA recommends seniors aged 65 and older undergo annual exams. If you are considered to be at-risk, your optometrist may suggest you visit more frequently.
Factors that may put you at risk include:
During the exam, your optometrist will ensure your family’s health history is up to date. Your optometrist will often open the exam with a conversation addressing any questions or concerns you may have. The more you can tell your optometrist, the better they can tailor the exam to address your unique concerns.
The exam includes visual acuity testing, which relies on tools and techniques like an eye chart or a phoropter. A phoropter can be used to help determine your glasses or contact lens prescription.
Your optometrist will then make a detailed assessment of your eye health. Your optometrist may use fundus photography, ocular coherence tomography (OCT) scans, and intraocular eye pressure (IOP) measurements to help detect signs of eye disease.
Eyes Now is proud to use Optos Retinal Imaging to help make determining the health of your eyes easy, fast, and comfortable.
