The Contact Lens Process

An eye exam is the first step towards determining if contact lenses are a good choice for you. During the exam, we’ll answer any questions you might have about contacts and examine your eyes, looking for conditions that may impact your ability to wear contacts comfortably.

The eye exam will also help us determine your contact lens prescription, and decide whether or not you require specialty contacts because of any eye conditions.

After the eye exam will come the fitting. The fitting will include detailed measurements of the size and shape of your eyes, helping your optometrist determine which style of contacts is best suited to you.

Once we have settled on a pair of contacts, we will send you home with some trial lenses to see how your eyes adjust to wearing contact lenses. If you experience any discomfort, please remove your contact lenses and get in touch with your optometrist.

Specialty Contact Lenses at Eyes Now

Patients that have trouble wearing traditional contact lenses may want to consider scleral contact lenses. Scleral contacts are larger and sit on the sclera (whites) of your eyes instead of on the cornea. These lenses are often an excellent choice for patients with corneal conditions like keratoconus.

When light hits your cornea and crystalline lens, it passes through different spherical aberrations (positive for your cornea, negative for your crystalline lens) that compensate for each other, keeping your vision clear.

However, the spherical properties of your crystalline lens can increase as you age, impacting the quality of your vision. Aspheric contact lenses can help compensate for the increased spherical aberration and provide you clear vision again.

Toric contact lenses are designed for patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when your eyes bend light differently on both the vertical and horizontal axes, resulting in blurry vision at all distances. Toric lenses are specially designed to correct this issue and are weighted to ensure they remain rotationally stable throughout the day.

Multifocal contact lenses are designed for patients who require multiple prescriptions to facilitate clear vision, and can be used by patients with presbyopia, hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism.

Rigid gas-permeable contact lenses are designed to be more durable than regular “soft” lenses, while still ensuring your cornea gets the oxygen it needs. They are also bacteria resistant because, unlike their soft counterparts, they don’t contain water.

Hybrid contact lenses have 2 distinct sections – a rigid gas-permeable center surrounded by a soft skirt. This hybrid design lets patients experience the crisp, clear vision of RGP contact lenses with the comfort and stability of soft, hydrogel contact lenses.

Transition contact lenses use the same great technology that Transition lenses use. Transition lenses adapt to help you enjoy clear, comfortable vision in all lighting situations.

If you are looking to add some flair to your look, you may be interested in color contact lenses. Color contact lenses give the illusion of changing the color of your iris without sacrificing clear vision and comfort.

Recent research has determined that soft multifocal contact lenses may help slow the progression of myopia in children, preserving their eyesight and helping keep their prescriptions low. If your child has myopia, please book an appointment for them today to see if they can benefit from multifocal contact lenses.
