What Do You Need to Know About Dry Eye?

Dry eye, also known as ocular surface disease, occurs when the tear film of your eye becomes unstable – either because your eyes can’t produce enough tears or because the tears they do produce are of poor quality.

Your tear film is made up of 3 layers: mucin, aqueous (water), and lipid (oil). If any of these layers are lacking, it can result in dry, irritated eyes.

Mucin forms the inner layer of the tear film and helps ensure that your tear film spreads evenly over the surface of your eye so that your eyes stay lubricated. Mucin is also important for ensuring the tear film clings to the surface of your eye.

This layer is mostly comprised of water. Water helps with lubrication and to wash away any foreign particles that have made it into your eyes.

The lipid layer of your eye helps to seal in the aqueous layer, preventing it from evaporating too quickly.

Dry Eye Causes & Symptoms

Some of the most notable causes of dry eye include:

  • Laser eye surgery
  • Allergies
  • Blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
  • Improperly fitted contact lenses
  • Aging
  • Infrequent blinking

Symptoms of dry eye may include:

  • Stinging, burning, scratchy, or gritty eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Overly watery or teary eyes
  • An increased sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses or driving at night
  • A stringy mucus forming in and around your eyes
  • Blurry vision

Treatments We Offer

Depending on the cause of your dry eye, Oasis tear drops may help keep your eyes effectively hydrated.

HydroEye offers oral supplements that contain Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help your eyes produce higher-quality tears.

When dry eye is caused by blocked tear glands (a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction), Bruder eye masks may be able to reduce symptoms and offer long-lasting relief. These are heated masks that help melt away blockages in your meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil your tear film needs to remain stable.
