Set Your Child up for Success

Your child’s vision helps them navigate through life and learn about the world around them. Hopefully, clear vision is something that they will be able to rely on for the rest of their lives. An undiagnosed or unmanaged vision problem can impact your child’s development and hinder them for the rest of their lives.

We know you want what’s best for your child. Regular eye exams can help you safeguard their vision from disease and other conditions.

If you are worried about your child’s prescription getting worse every year or if your family has a history of myopia (poor distance vision) learn about how Eyes Now manages myopia.

Invest in your child’s future. Book their next eye exam today!

When Should Your Child Have an Eye Exam?

The timelines below are recommended by the American Association of Ophthalmologists (AAO). However, your optometrist or eyecare professional might recommend more frequent eye exams to help manage any potential issues. At Eyes Now, we provide eye exams for children 4 years of age and older.

Right after their birth, you should have your child’s eyes examined by an optometrist, ophthalmologist, or pediatrician to make sure their eyes are healthy and are responding normally to stimuli. If your child is born premature, or if their eyes are considered at-risk, they should have a thorough examination performed by an ophthalmologist.

Before their first birthday, you should have your child’s eyes examined by an optometrist, ophthalmologist, or pediatrician to monitor their eye development.

When your child is 3 years old, they should have their eyes examined again. It’s around this age that refractive errors or other conditions, including strabismus and amblyopia, typically begin to form. Spotting signs of trouble allows your optometrist to manage, treat, and possibly prevent problems.

School-aged children should have their eyes examined annually. This allows your optometrist to keep an eye out for refractive errors or possible alignment issues. Myopia is incredibly common in children and, in some cases, can affect your child’s ability to succeed in the classroom.

How Can I Tell If My Child Is Having Vision Problems?

Your child may not know they have a vision problem, or they may simply be too young to communicate their issue effectively. Luckily, there are signs you can watch for so that you can help protect your child’s vision.

Your child might be experiencing an eye problem if they:

  • Rub their eyes frequently
  • Are having trouble focusing
  • Are experiencing frequent headaches
  • Cover one eye to see
  • Are sitting close to the television or if they are reading books close to their face
  • Complain that they see double
  • Are experiencing eye fatigue

What To Expect During the Exam

We work hard to ensure our eye exams are quick, easy, and comfortable for your child. We take the time to help ensure your child has a positive experience and that they’re getting the treatment they deserve.

During the exam, we’ll have a chat with you about your child’s eye and health history and address any questions or concerns you may have. Knowing more will help us tailor the exam to your child to serve them best.

Much like our adult & senior eye exams, the visual acuity of your child’s eyes will be determined. Afterwards, your optometrist will assess the overall health of your child’s eyes and look for signs of possible eye disease.

If your child needs glasses or contact lenses, you can take their new prescription to a reputable optical retailer.

Is Your Child Due For an Eye Exam?

We can help you safeguard your child’s ability to see and protect their eyes from disease with a comprehensive eye exam.
