What is Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive surgery or laser vision correction, is a group of procedures that are designed to permanently correct refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

Not everyone is a good candidate for laser eye surgery. Factors such as corneal thickness, eye disease, past eye injuries, and the size of your pupils need to be considered when thinking about laser eye surgery.

Having laser eye surgery doesn’t necessarily guarantee perfect vision. Some patients find they still require the use of glasses or contact lenses after the procedure.

At Eyes Now, we offer consultations for:

LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is one of the most commonly performed laser eye surgeries, and is popular because of its short recovery time.

During the operation, your ophthalmologist will create a small flap on your superficial cornea. By folding this flap back, your ophthalmologist will have access to your corneal stroma. The corneal stroma will be reshaped using an excimer laser, and the flap is then folded back into its original position and left to heal.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is quite similar to LASIK eye surgery.

Instead of creating a flap, the outermost layer of your cornea (epithelium) is removed completely using a small blade, laser, brush, or alcohol solution. Your ophthalmologist will then shape your cornea using an excimer laser, and the epithelium will grow back over the next few days.

Untreated cataracts are the leading cause of blindness around the world. Some patients may find temporary relief from cataracts by using prescription contacts or glasses, but the only treatment for this condition is cataract lens replacement surgery.

Cataracts occur when the crystalline lens of your eye becomes rigid and cloudy. Your ophthalmologist can replace this natural lens with a clear, artificial intraocular lens. This intraocular lens is manufactured using your prescription.

Pre-Surgery

It’s important that you book a few days off of work or school following the procedure to let your eyes heal.

Please make sure you aren’t wearing any colognes, fragrances, perfumes, or scents containing alcohol when you come in for your surgery. Make sure you aren’t wearing clothes made of fleece or wool or other materials that can attract dust or lint, as these particles can cause problems during the operation.

Post-Surgery

Your eye care team will book a series of follow-up appointments over the course of the healing process, and will work closely with your ophthalmology team to co-manage your recovery.

You will be given a pair of protective sunglasses to help protect your eyes while they heal, as well as eye drops to help accelerate healing.

Some common side effects of laser eye surgery experienced during the healing process include dryness, irritation, light sensitivity, and redness.

Please let your eye care team know if you are experiencing side-effects that you believe are more severe than normal or if they are persisting longer than expected.
